An Introduction to LAOS

An Introduction to LAOS

With a landscape dominated by mountains, lush forests, pristine waterfalls and the mighty Mekong River, Laos is one of the hidden treasures of Indochina. The country has the smallest population of all the Indochinese countries, 60 per cent of whom are devoutly Buddhist.

Laos provides travellers a chance to truly experience Asia as it once was. Still relatively undeveloped and blessed geographically with natural beauty, this country will leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

Time - Laos is 5 hours behind New Zealand EST

Language - The official national language is Lao. Vietnamese, Thai and English are also common.

Entry Requirements - Passports must be valid for six months beyond the length of stay. Visas are required for New Zealand passport holders – please contact your preferred travel agent for assistance in obtaining these.

Cities

VIENTIANE

Weaving along the Mekong River, Vientiane is the capital and the largest city in Laos, however, it is still small enough to get to know easily. The treelined boulevards and old temples impart an old world charm, in spite of bustling traffic.

LUANG PRABANG

Set amidst a striking mountainous skyline, Luang Prabang is perhaps the best preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. This UNESCO World Heritage listed city is the gem of Laos and was the Royal residence of the last King, Sisavan Vatthana.
