Rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, Napier is known for art deco landmarks like the zigzag-patterned Daily Telegraph Building and is home to many fine wineries, amazing restaurants, bars and cafes. The boutique shops are a must visit and the beautifully transformed Marine Parade is well worth a stroll.

Located 4-hour drive north of Wellington or 5 hours south from Auckland, Napier can also be reached by a 1 hour flight from either city.  With a population of 65,000, Napier is often referred to as a 1930s film set, and one of the best ways to enjoy the streetscape is on a self-guided walk.  

Along the tree-lined waterfront promenade the Marine Parade, the Pania of the Reef statue depicting a Maori maiden, is a symbol of the city. Pania was a beautiful maiden who lived in the sea. By daylight she swam about with other sea creatures but after sunset would go to a stream that ran into the bay where the city of Napier now sits. The statue has often been compared to The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen; there is a resemblance between the two figures, both statues are small, bronze, and near the ocean, and both are based on similar stories.

Locals and visitors alike love getting outdoors in Hawke's Bay. With beautiful beaches, waterfalls you can swim in, and some excellent hiking and cycle trails, it's a great place to get outdoors. Whether it be a walk up Te Mata Peak, an adrenaline-filled rafting trip down the Mohaka River, or perhaps a lazy day at Waimarama Beach, the diversity of our outdoor experiences means there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Blessed with long sunshine hours and fertile plains, Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s most productive growing regions. This region is famous for its wine with over 70 wineries in the Hawke’s Bay area and its diverse growing region capable of producing a wide range best known for Syrah, Chardonnay and Merlot Cabernet blends. A relaxing way to explore the wineries is by the cycling paths link together to form over 200 kilometres of cycling on Hawke's Bay Trails. Do as much or as little of the trail as you like and enjoy the delicious wine and food stops along the way.  

One of New Zealand’s largest and most iconic events, Napier's annual highlight is the Art Deco Weekend held on the third weekend of February.  The whole region turns back the clock and dresses in its Deco finest with vintage vehicles and planes, Gatsby picnics and jazz concerts, parades and dancing in the street, good food and wine are just some of more than 100 events that celebrate the city's unique heritage.
