Frequently Asked Questions about New Zealand

  • When is the best time to travel to New Zealand?
New Zealand’s rugged beauty and varied landscapes make it a spectacular destination to visit at any time of year.  The summer months in New Zealand are the months of December to March, which bring warmer temperatures of 16°C to 24°C and longer hours of daylight that are ideal for visiting the lovely beaches or enjoying the many outdoor activities available, such as hiking and mountain biking.  June through to September is likely to bring snow to the South Island, as well as some of the North Island’s more mountainous areas, attracting skiers from far and wide.

  • What should I pack?
The North Island is usually warmer than the South Island, so you won’t need to pack as much warm clothing as you will if you are going to the South Island, specifically in winter. In the summer, both islands have a pleasant climate.  A light rain jacket is a good idea year round with comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent that works on both mosquitoes and sand flights - this is a must!

  • What costs can I expect to pay locally?
Somethings in New Zealand may seem more expensive than Australia and somethings may seem cheaper however they are both very comparable.  In main cities like Auckland, you may find it is a little more expensive than in the quieter, more rural areas. Restaurants and bars may be slightly more costly but not extortionate.

  • Is there a lot of walking on the tour?
To travel on any of our tours requires a reasonable level of fitness, but it is more about spending time on your feet, over uneven surfaces, rather than covering large distances. You will need to be agile getting on and off coaches and boats, walking around the sights and climbing steps. Our National Escort will always endeavour to provide the highest level of service and assistance; however, they cannot be expected to cater for customers who are unfit to complete the itinerary.
