Best known amongst Luang Prabang’s many ornate temples, Wat Xieng Thong is also one of Laos’ most historic. Built in the 1560s in the classical Laos style, wandering amongst the temples, pavilions, shrines and ornamental gardens offers one of Luang Prabang’s most tranquil experiences. Admire the low, gracefully flowing roofs sat atop of walls covered generously in glass mosaics and gold stencilling that glitter prettily in the sunshine and visit the Sanctuary of the Reclining Buddha, home to a statue of a reclining Buddha that dates from the construction of the temple, whilst the intricate ‘tree of life’ mosaic is simply beautiful.
