Acropolis of Athens

Close

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel that sits on a rocky outcrop at the heart of Greece’s capital. A Unesco World Heritage Site, the Acropolis is considered the most important ancient site in the Western world, and once you’ve seen and explored it, we think you’ll agree!

Built by Pericles in the 5th century BCE, the citadel was dedicated to the cult of Athena, and no expense was spared in the materials used. It was a city of temples and has come to represent the pinnacle of Classical Greece. The Acropolis today remains visible from across the city, its white Pentelic marble shimmering in the sun throughout the day.

The complex is best known for the magnificent Parthenon, but it encompasses much more, including the Propylaea, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Acropolis Museum, where you’ll find many of the original ancient sculptures and friezes.
