Malaysia’s most instantly recognisable landmark, the iconic twin Petronas Towers are visible across the city of Kuala Lumpur. At 451.9 metres and 88-stories, these were the world’s tallest buildings between 1998 and 2004; today they are 12th tallest and remain the tallest twin towers globally.

The towers were designed by architect Cesar Pelli in a Postmodern style to a vision of glittering diamonds in the sun and featuring motifs found in Islamic art – for example the eight-pointed star floor base, to signify stability and harmony. Surprisingly, the towers only took six years to build and were officially opened on 31 August 1999. The two-storey skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors link the towers, and help to increase stability, while the observation deck on the 86th floor gives sensational views over Malaysia’s capital.

The headquarters of oil and gas giant Petronas, the Petronas Towers also feature one of Kuala Lumpur’s best shopping malls, an oceanarium, a concert hall and the KLCC Park, a picturesque green-lung project with a lake.
