Mexico Holidays

Close
Varied, vibrant, colourful and often spicy, for those who delve deep and fully embrace their holiday in Mexico, there is so, so much to discover. Packed with different landscapes, climates and traditions, you don’t need several tequilas to appreciate the magic of its warm people, magnificent ruins and thriving indigenous culture. Whether you’re exploring the cobbled streets of charming colonial towns, feeling powder soft sand between your toes or exploring anything from rainforest, rich Mesoamerican heritage, Mayan pyramids or the echoes of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in the art of Mexico City, prepare to be intoxicated.

Urban v Nature in Mexico
From the hustle and bustle of Mexico City to the colonial treasures of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico’s cities give a snapshot of the country’s fascinating history. Built on the ruins of Aztec Tenochtitlan, the capital is a vibrant melting pot where modern and ancient collide on streets where you’ll find world-class dining, excellent museums and a flourishing art scene. Oaxaco is deeply rooted in indigenous history and the place to find unique and traditional handicrafts – head to its markets for colour and flavour - while San Miguel de Allende is perhaps Mexico’s most striking city, with awe-inspiring colonial architecture, culinary delights and a brace of art galleries.

Outside of the urban centres, you’re in for a huge array of landscapes – from the spine of mountains to rainforest-fringed coastlines, armies of cactus and agave plantations, to the sailing and surfing waves of the Pacific Coast and powdered sugar sands of the Caribbean. Amongst this nature are all manner of wonders waiting to be explored. Ancient ruins peek over treetops full of monkeys and toucans, indigenous communities live the lives of their ancestors, the cool waters of cenotes hide in forest sheltered caves and so much more!

Ancient Ruins and Indigenous Culture
Mexico is home to thousands of ancient ruins, thanks to a long history that encompasses civilisations like the Maya, Aztecs, Teotihuacan and Zapotec, to name just a few. Some you’ll know, like Chichen Itza and Tulum, while others like Monte Alban and Palenque you may be hearing for the first time. Atmospheric and magical, each gives a fascinating glimpse into the distant past, with intricate stonework and towering temples, often lost to the surrounding nature for a few hundred years before being ‘discovered’ by explorers.

Mexico fully embraces its indigenous communities and there are plenty of opportunities to meet and mingle with these wonderfully warm people. Visiting villages highlights the ways in which today’s populations live like their ancestors did and the folklore and practices that are being kept alive. In and around the city of Oaxaca, considered Mexico’s cultural epicentre, is particularly rich in indigenous culture, and is the best place to pick up traditional crafts for souvenirs.

Tacos, tamales and tostadas, oh my!
Whatever your preconceived ideas about Mexican food may be, discard them right now! This is a country with a strong love of food, a rich culinary tradition and a deep intertwining of cuisine and culture. And while much of what you’ve heard of – tacos, burritos, enchiladas – feature, there is so much more to taste! Highly diverse, with distinct flavours and dishes in different regions, and a rich fusion of ancient ingredients, your tastebuds are in for a treat!
Sample the vibrant street food scene, sit down to wholesome spreads with locals at busy cantinas or dine on the world-class dishes at  Michelin-starred restaurants – there is absolutely something for everyone.
