Snow monkeys, otherwise known as Japanese macaques, are the Japanese archipelago’s only monkey species, found on three of the four main islands and many of the smaller ones. At home in a diverse range of climates and habitats, Japanese macaques are a major part of Japanese culture, featuring in art and folklore and featuring in plenty of proverbs and idioms.
