Tour Highlights

Our Mongolia and Naadam Highlights tour will see you exploring the most iconic sites, delving into deep-rooted culture and dining on delicious cuisine.

Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Fly to Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar. On arrival you will be met at Ulaanbaatar airport by your National Escort from Wendy Wu Tours. Together with all other group members who may be arriving at a similar time, you will transfer 30 minutes to your hotel. Please note that some Australian flight departures may depart the evening (July 5) before day 1 (July 6) of the tour.

  • Day 2

    Begin this morning with a visit to the Museum of Mongolian History and the Museum of Fine Art to help put your journey in context. Also discover the 19th Century Gandan Monastery, the largest and most important in Mongolia, home to over 150 monks and explore the Sukhbaatar Square. Please note that both the museums we visit today will charge extra fees (approximately US$10) for using a camera in their exhibits.

  • Day 3
    Pre-Naadam Events / Ulaanbaatar
    Day 3: Pre-Naadam Events / Ulaanbaatar

    Travel to a wrestling camp and learn about the rules of Mongolia wrestling and the various techniques and tricks. Later, visit an archery training camp, where you will observe Mongolian archers lining up their shots. Learn how precision and technique play a key role in successful archery and have a go at using the traditional bow and arrow yourself. Spend your first night in a traditional ger and learn to cook a Mongolian BBQ and share it with the wrestlers at dinner.

  • Day 4

    Head to Terelj National Park and soak up the beautiful alpine scenery, visiting the Genghis Khan statue complex en route. Explore Turtle Rock and take an easy hike up to the Aryabal Monastery, perched on the mountainside. Also visit a local family to get a glimpse of their nomadic lifestyle. Spend the night in a ger camp.

  • Day 5
    Ulaan Baatar / Pre Nadaam Festival Events
    Day 5: Ulaan Baatar / Pre Nadaam Festival Events

    In the morning, drive to the horse racing field close to the Khustain National Park for the beginning of the Naadam Festival. After visiting Hui Doloon Khudag (Horse racing field) return to Ulaanbaatar city for Naadam Eve and visit Central Square where you can view the Naadam Mongol costumes on display. In the afternoon, visit the Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan and enjoy free time to do some shopping search out local handicrafts like cashmere and felt products.

    Day 6: Ulaan Baatar / Nadaam Festival Events

    One of the special features you will encounter over the next 2 days is experiencing first-hand the annual Naadam Festival. The highlight of your journey begins as the group mix with locals and nomads alike to witness the Opening Ceremony of the Naadam Festival, at Central Stadium. Here you can see featured events that include wrestling, horseracing and archery. You will have the chance to view the procession of the athletes, officials and monks, as the first round of competition in the wrestling tournament begins.

  • Day 7
    Khustain National Park
    Day 7: Khustain National Park

    A thrilling day unfolds as you to view the cross-country horseracing. Also known as ‘tumnii ekh’ (leader of ten thousand), this certainly is sought after amongst the younger competitors. Cheer along with the locals as the athletes compete and enthral in the carnival-like atmosphere. Continue onto the Khustain National Park, around 2 hours away where you’ll spend the night in a gert.

  • Day 8
    Day 8: Kharkorin

    Travel to Mongolia's former capital, Kharkhorin, situated on the Orkhon River, a spot handpicked by Ganghis Khan in 1220. The city remained Mongolia’s political, cultural and economic hub for only 40 years before power was transferred to Khanbaliq – now modern-day Beijing. After the collapse of the Mongolian Empire, the city was abandoned to the elements and destroyed by roving soldiers until its remains were used to build Erdene Zuu Khiid, Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery – which we visit today.

    Ongiin Khiid
    Day 9: Ongiin Khiid

    Journey to the banks of the Ongii River and view the atmospheric ruins of two monasteries – Barlim Khiid and Khutagt Khiid, which form Ongiin Khiid, formerly one of the largest monastic complexes in Mongolia.

  • Day 10
    Khongoriin Els Singing Dunes
    Day 10: Khongoriin Els Singing Dunes

    Embark on a 4WD adventure to Khongoryn Els and explore Mongolia’s largest sand dunes, also known as the ‘Singing Sand Dunes’. Enjoy the beauty of these stark landscapes and for those who are feeling adventurous, climb to the top for fantastic views, which will be well worth it!

  • Day 11
    Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs
    Day 11: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs

    Transfer to the ger camp near Gurvansaikhan (Three Beauty) National Park. Spend the next two days immersed in natural beauty amongst jagged mountains, undulating sand dunes and a valley that is snow-capped for most of the year.

  • Day 12
    Baga Gazriin Chuluu
    Day 12: Baga Gazriin Chuluu

    This morning, you will visit the Gobi Dinosaurs Cemetery and explore the surrounding landscape. You will have the opportunity to hike in the area and take in the awe-inspiring views before heading onwards to a ger camp for the night.

  • Day 13
    Day 13: Ulaanbaatar

    This morning, visit the Tsorjiin Khureenii Khiid Monastery en route back to Ulaanbaatar

  • Days 14-15
    Depart Ulaanbaatar
    Days 14-15: Depart Ulaanbaatar

    Fly to Australia, arriving home the following day.
