The city of Hamilton, New Zealand’s largest inland city, is nestled on the banks of the mighty Waikato River and is known today for its walks, elaborate gardens, cafes and nightlife. Back in the 1990s however, the city and its surrounds were first established as a hub for the dairy sector due to its mild climate, moderate year-round rainfall and lush green pastures – all of which contribute to producing some of the world’s best milk products.

With the Waikato River being New Zealand’s longest, flowing for 16 kilometres through the heart of Hamilton, bridges became an integral asset for the city. In total, there are six unique road bridges across the Waikato, as well as a service bridge that is also used by pedestrians and cyclists.

The population of Hamilton is estimated to be around 180,000, over half of which are younger than 30 years old. With more than 80 ethnic groups represented, this multi-cultural city embraces all walks of life.

The city is also well known as a top destination for national and international events in purpose-built facilities - from sporting matches such as rugby, cricket, netball, rowing and boxing to large concerts and festivals.

No trip to the Waikato is complete however without visiting the famous Hamilton Gardens, now the city’s leading tourist attraction. The Gardens themselves are visually stunning and are connected by a series of webbed paths. The site features 21 gardens in total representing the art, beliefs and traditions of different civilisations or historical garden styles.

Also widely regarded as a Waikato icon is Zealong Tea Estate - the only commercial tea estate in New Zealand, producing 100% organic tea from over 1.2 million thriving tea plants.

Further afield, but still in the heart of the Waikato region, film buffs can step into the lush pastures of the Middle-earth movie set used most recently in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. And under the green hills of nearby Waitomo lies a labyrinth of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers which can be explored on foot or by boat.
