Admire the magnificent Huka Falls (Huka means "Foam" in the Maori language), which is the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand, located a short distance north of Taupo Town. These falls were created approximately 26,000 years ago when the narrowing of the Waikato canyon was created when the Oruanui eruption of Taupo Volcano took place. You will hear the Huka Falls well before you see them – it’s the sound of nearly a quarter of a million litres of water per second erupting 11 metres into the Waikato River below.
