With a population of just over 212,000 and famous for a vibrant creative culture fuelled by great food, wine, craft beer, coffee and events, Wellington is a cosmopolitan city with an energetic personality. A compact city, it encompasses a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour and colourful timber houses on surrounding hills. From Lambton Quay, the iconic red Wellington Cable Car heads to the Wellington Botanic Gardens. Strong winds through the Cook Strait give it the nickname "Windy Wellington."

Wellington is where the North Island meets the South Island with the interislander ferry crossing connecting over to Picton in the South Island. It is a passenger, vehicle and the rail service across New Zealand’s Cook Strait.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the city, Oriental Bay’s golden sand beach is a top spot for a bit of walking, cycling or people watching. It's a safe swimming spot for families and plays host to beach sporting events during summer. It's also home to some of the swankiest real estate in the city and great eateries. If you’re into the outdoors, Wellington has action-packed adventure activities like mountain biking and sea-water kayaking, as well as beautiful walks around the harbour and surrounding hills.

On the waterfront itself you will find New Zealand’s national museum. Te Papa, as it’s colloquially known, means ‘our place’ and is one of the best interactive museums in the world. Te Papa offers a range of informative and inspiring daily tours delivered by highly trained and experienced Te Papa Hosts. The tours enrich the experience of any Te Papa visit and bring the stories of New Zealand's land and people to life.

Known as the culinary capital of New Zealand, Wellington is renowned for its appreciation of fine dining, excellent cheap eats, specialty coffee, superb wine and craft beer. Courtenay Place is where you will find the heart of Wellington’s culinary culture. It is also the entertainment hub with bars, clubs, theatres and cinemas. A walk down Cuba Street, just off Courtenay Place, discover ethnic restaurants, second-hand bookstores, vintage stores and hip cafés full of students and artists.

Weather in Wellington is very unpredictable due to its location at the southern tip of the North Island. As the locals say, “You can’t beat Wellington on a good day”, as on a beautiful, sunny day when the temperature is just right, Wellington is an incredible place to be.
