Set amongst the valleys and forests of holy Koyasan are a huge number of monasteries, temples and shrines, all clustered around Kongobu-ji, the headquarters of the Shingon school of Buddhism, founded in the 9th century. This isolated, atmospheric valley is encircled by eight towering peaks, said to resemble an auspicious lotus flower. This is a place to savour the tranquillity, the beauty of nature and spectacular views as you explore some of the main holy temples and sites – wander through Okunoin, a vast cemetery of 200,000 stupas, to the mystical Hall of Lanterns hosts 10,000 oil lamps that are kept permanently lit.
